Communications Assistant, Historias Initiative

Reports to: Manager, Community Outreach

Status: Full-time Temporary from 7/15 – 9/15/09; Part-time Temporary 9/16/09 – 7/15/10

Position Overview

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening. StoryCorps Historias is a one-year initiative to record the stories of 700 Latinos around the country. Recognizing the need to cover diverse Latino communities, StoryCorps Historias will gather stories from Latino residents in the US that represent numerous national backgrounds – Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central and South American – as well as urban and rural experiences. StoryCorps Historias will be conducted with partnership and support from the Latino Public Radio Consortium, historical and cultural institutions, and membership organizations.

The Historias Communications Assistant is a key member of a fast-paced, highly collaborative team that will help successfully launch and execute the goals of the Historias Initiative. The Communications Assistant works directly with StoryCorps’ Historias staff, senior management, and Marketing & Communications Department as well as an outside public relations firm to help create the public face of StoryCorps’ Historias Initiative.

The Communications Assistant, Historias Initiative reports to the Manager of Community Outreach in coordination with the Marketing and Communications department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

7/15/09 to 9/15/09 Essential Functions:

* Manage and oversee the work of our external marketing/PR firm, and Historias staff to plan and execute the national Historias launch in Washington D.C., approximately in mid-September; Goal is to ensure national media coverage of launch event.

* Collaborate with Historias staff and other designated StoryCorps staff to ensure smooth operations and clear communications about all DC launch plans and activities.

Ongoing Duties & Responsibilities:

* Collaborate with Outreach, Mobile, StoryBooth and Fee-for-Service departments to develop Historias marketing and promotion plans.

* Assist Marketing Coordinator and Historias Senior Coordinator in design and production of all Historias marketing collateral, including printed materials, e-materials, newsletters and templates for use by StoryCorps departments.

* Assist Marketing Coordinator and Historias Senior Coordinator to create co-branded Historias materials and messages in collaboration partner institutions.

* Coordinate with StoryCorps’ Development department regarding any communications with Historias participants/alumni.

* Coordinate with Communications Assistant to track all press coverage and prepare press reports for funders, StoryCorps Executive Team, and Board Members.

* Manage Historias digital assets such logos, photos, audio files, and testimonials.

Knowledge, Skills, & Qualifications

* Bilingual in Spanish and English is required.

* Cultural awareness and knowledge of Latino communities in the United States.

* 2 – 3 years experience in Marketing, Communications, or a related field.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

* Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

* Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task.

* Demonstrated analytical skills and problem-solving ability; adaptive to growing, changing organization.

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software is required. Basic HTML (blog level) and experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign) is helpful but not required.

* Proficiency on a Mac platform is preferred.
